Robby Gordon is a four-time winner in one of the smaller classes. So is Mark Martin, who at 51 would rather sleep than drive all night.

Martin's biggest class victory came in 1995 when he teamed with Paul Newman, Michael Brockman, and Tom Kendall. Martin and Brockman did most of the driving at night and the challenges were deeper than darkness since Martin was nearly 10 inches shorter than Brockman.

Bill Elliott and Terry Labonte, both NASCAR champions, also are former class winners.

Allmendinger is back for his fifth 24-hour race. His best finish came in 2008 when he finished second.

"It's really one of those things that for me as a driver I look at there's four or five races, if you could only have those five races on your resume as winning, Daytona 500, the Indy 500, and F1 it's Monaco," Allmendinger said. "And in sports car racing, it's LeMans and Daytona. Those races, if you could have it on your resume as a victory, that's what you want to do."

Allmendinger won four CART Champ Car races in 2006. That earned him an invitation with Michael Shank Racing. Their second-place finish turned his racing passion into an obsession. It also allowed him to race against some of his racing heroes.

"I mean, the first year, this was my last year in Champ Car, Jeff Gordon was there when I showed up and I had never really got to speak to Jeff," Allmendinger said. "I was moving into Cup, you know, Jeff was always my hero growing up. And to actually be able to sit down and talk to him and speak to him, for me, it was a really cool thing.

"For me, I'm a huge race fan. I'm probably a bigger race fan than a race driver. And it's just cool especially with how big the 24 hours are getting and with NASCAR being a part of it, it seems like there's so many good cars now that you get a lot of drivers from different types of racing that show up and try to go out there and win the race
